Young people who attended the Medway Youth Parliament Annual Youth Conference came up with their top ten stress-busters. Before we get started with that, we take a look at causes and signs of stress.

We've all experienced stress at some time. Whether you've got lots of school/college work or a big meeting coming up, stress is sure to make an appearance. It isn't necessarily harmful though - we all need challenges. But, too much of it can be a bad thing and it's important to be able to spot when stress is getting out of control.

   

Top 10 causes of stress

  1. Exams

  2. Pressure to get high grades – from both school and parents

  3. Coursework – big amounts and short deadlines

  4. Arguments – particularly family rows

  5. Relationships

  6. Parents having a favourite child

  7. Bullying

  8. Peer pressure

  9. Appearance – mainly size

  10. Sexual orientation

There's plenty of stuff for young people to get stressed about, but how do you spot the warning signs?

  

Top 10 signs of stress

  1. Making too many silly mistakes

  2. Lack of concentration

  3. Feeling worried or anxious

  4. Being angry or irritable

  5. Headaches

  6. Tiredness and unable to sleep well

  7. Indigestion, feeling queasy or upset stomach

  8. No appetite or binge-eating

  9. Turning to smoking/alcohol/drugs to cope

  10. Illness – prone to colds, flu etc

Aren't we always told that prevention is better than cure?...

   

Top 10 ways to prevent stress

  1. Time management – be organised

  2. Exercise – release tensions

  3. Being able to recognise stress – see list above

  4. Look at all possible outcomes – then you are prepared if the worst happens

  5. Aromatherapy – nice and calming

  6. Avoiding conflict – don’t look for arguments

  7. Plenty of sleep – it's easier to get stressed if you’re tired

  8. Me-time – take time out to do what you like

  9. Talking to people – get it off your chest before it bothers you

  10. Avoiding junk food – caffeine, additives etc

So what should you do if you're already stressed?...

  1. Talking to friends or family

  2. Listening to music

  3. Relaxing or using breathing techniques

  4. Having a hobby

  5. Going for a long walk

  6. Having me-time

  7. Shopping

  8. Sport/gym

  9. Chocolate

  10. Lose yourself in a book or computer game

   

Top five bad coping strategies (yes, we know we said top 10s)

  1. Denial – it won’t go away by ignoring it

  2. Smoking/drinking/drugs – can just give you another problem

  3. Self harm – can just give you another problem

  4. Running away – stay where you are, you need all the support you can get

  5. Harming others – don’t take it out on other people, talk to them instead!

  2. Friends

  4. Mediator/peer mentor

  5. Youth leader
